About Temple:

Temple is a city located in Bell County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city proper had a population of 54,514. Adjacent to the county seat (Belton), Temple lies at the hub of the region referred to as Central Texas.

Temple was founded in the mid-1800s as a railroad town with the Sante Fe Hospital being based there and has since prospered. Best known for its strength as a regional medical center (primarily due to the Scott & White Clinic), Temple has more physicians per capita than any other community in the nation. Besides health services, this central Texas town is headquarters to two multi-national companies, Wilson Art and McLane.

Temple Geography:

Temple is located at 31°5'37" North, 97°21'44" West (31.093678, -97.362202).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 169.5 km2 (65.4 mi2). 169.3 km2 (65.3 mi2) of it is land and 0.2 km2 (0.1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Temple Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 54,514 people, 21,543 households, and 14,110 families residing in the city. The population density is 322.1/km2 (834.2/mi2). There are 23,511 housing units at an average density of 138.9/km2 (359.8/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 69.76% White, 16.49% African American, 0.51% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 9.23% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. 17.82% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 21,543 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.4% are married couples living together, 13.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.5% are non-families. 29.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 15.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,135, and the median income for a family is $42,795. Males have a median income of $30,858 versus $22,113 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,360. 13.9% of the population and 10.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
